Mark had an unexpected instinct for unusual combinations that achieved visual effects. Sometimes these effects were subtle, but most of the time, such as in this Abstract Expressionist collage painting, she played with the exhilarating contrast of wide scarlet brushstrokes against areas of complementary saturated turquoise. This work is a dynamic example of Mark's talent for color, and adding to the effect are her thick, calligraphic black brushstrokes, reminiscent of other abstract artists such as Franz Kline. This work likely dates to the late 1950s or early 60s when she more often utilized this graphic element in her compositions.
Layering paint with other materials, in this case, tissue paper and newspaper, Mark built up the surfaces of her abstract paintings to create textural interest as well.
This untitled collage painting was exhibited in Daphne Alazraki Fine Art's booths at the Art Palm Beach art fair, January 24–28, 2024 and the LA Art Show, February 14-18, 2024, Los Angeles, CA, as well as in Berry Campbell's booth at the Dallas Art Fair, April 4-7, 2024.
