One interesting aspect of researching #LibbieMark

One interesting aspect of researching #LibbieMark has been to learn about the artists that she interacted with and collected, throughout her educational experience and beyond.1. First, we have a mystery from Mark’s collection: this great painting is signed “Fischl” on the back, but we have no artist’s first name, no date (we assume 1950s-1960s), and no title. If anyone recognizes this artist’s style, please let us know! (See signature next image)2. While living in Great Neck, NY and raising a family with her husband Edward, Mark studied at the Great Neck Adult Education arts program in the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. The GNAE was known for its significant artist faculty such as Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Louise Nevelson, and Larry Rivers (1923-2002). According to her family, Libbie studied with Rivers, whose painting in Mark’s collection is a 1953 study for a “Berdie” portrait.3. We have posted previously about Mark’s friend and classmate at the Art Students League and at the #HansHofmann School, female abstract Korean-American painter Na Hei-Gyoon (1929-2004). Mark owned 5 paintings by Na, one of which is shown here, likely from the late 1950s-early 60s.4. In the 1960s, Mark exhibited with a fascinating but understudied artists group, the Vectors, which had a majority of women members through its 10-year history. One of the artist members, Mary Shaier (1905–1971), was the group’s secretary, according to surviving correspondence in the archives of the 92 Street Y. She also studied with Hofmann. With its vertical format and incredibly textural surface, this colorful and dynamic composition is a prime example of #LibbieMark ‘s #AbstractExpressionist collage painting work. Difficult to show in just one photo, her paintings are multi-layered with paint and collaged tissue paper to create depth and impasto. In July 1957, #LibbieMark enrolled in #HansHofmann

In July 1957, #LibbieMark enrolled in #HansHofmann’s last Provincetown art school summer session. Being surrounded by other artists in one of America’s most significant art colonies, and having the guidance of this important abstract painter were foundational for Mark’s painting career. Thereafter, she spent every summer painting in Provincetown through 1971.In researching her history for a biographical essay and timeline (read it on our website!), we found evidence of her intent to study with the famous artist and teacher as well as her course records in the Archives of American Art. While Libbie was studying with Vaclav Vytlacil (Hofmann’s former student) at the Art Students League in the Spring of 1957, Vytlacil encouraged her to apply to study with Hofmann. Her letter request to Hofmann, a follow up letter with her deposit, and her class attendance/registration records (listed as “LIBBY”) are shown in this post. Can’t believe the show is over already! @BerryCampbell’s “Libbie Mark: Abstract Expressionist” focused on #LibbieMark’s collage paintings from the 1960s. Working between New York and Provincetown, Mark developed a singular, experimental approach to painting, creating works distinguished by their rich materiality, tactile surfaces, and sophisticated color relationships, merging painterly gesture with collage-based construction, positioning her work within the broader experimental currents of postwar abstraction.The exhibition was on view June 4 - July 10.
