Collage Painting #63-5 is small in size, but possesses the drama of a much bigger work and an intricate surface that invites a very close look. Unlike many of Mark's other early collage paintings, which have an overall texture, this work features tissue paper and other colored paper incorporated into the paint primarily at the center. Mark emphasized its singular compositional focus by utilizing very dark tones around the perimeter and starkly contrasting color combinations toward the middle such as turquoise and blue with orange, and black with yellow. Two other collage paintings also have a similar central yellow form,Collage Painting #40 (LMPF Inv. no. 20J) and an untitled collage painting (LMPF Inv. no. 27R). Mark added to the dramatic effect in this piece by applying thick, black brushstrokes, reminiscent of other Abstract Expressionist artists such as Franz Kline. She more often utilized this graphic element in her compositions in the late 1950s and early 60s.

This work features artist and work info labels on verso, including Mark's 176 East 71st Street address in New York City, which is where she and her husband Edward finally settled in 1962 after having rented an apartment at 35 East 85th street since 1958. She then rented a painting studio further uptown and later rented a separate studio in the East 71st building.

When we were in New York for the opening of #Libbi When we were in New York for the opening of #LibbieMark’s solo exhibition at #BerryCampbell last week, we also made time to visit @HollisTaggart gallery across the street, which had a beautiful @CharlesSeliger exhibition on view that opened the same night as Libbie’s show. From the gallery: “The works on view span from 1944 to 1993, providing a rare, comprehensive view of the evolution of Seliger’s practice. Though often classified as a first-generation Abstract Expressionist, Seliger created work that complicated stylistic boundaries especially with the small scale of his works and his penchant for reworking the same paintings for long periods of time... On view are Seliger’s intimately scaled paintings that capture the strange, evocative worlds of natural phenomena. His works were born from his deep reverence for nature and his desire to keep alive its mystery and creative impulses.”Libbie also worked on a smaller scale, but that just makes you look even closer at what both artists accomplished in their intricate and beautiful surfaces. Swipe for a few photos of the works in Seliger’s show. Definitely worth a look after you visit Berry Campbell!“Libbie Mark: Abstract Expressionist” and “Charles Seliger: The Structure of Matter” are both on view through July 10.For more info about Libbie, please visit our website, link is in bio. In addition to #LibbieMark’s exhibition of collage In addition to #LibbieMark’s exhibition of collage paintings from the 1960s on view now at #BerryCampbell, a tandem show of Ann Purcell’s (b. 1941) work from the 1970s opened last week at the gallery as well.“My painting is working within tensions of paradox, ambiguity, duality, and contradiction. It is not on one side or the other; it is those polarities united. This is the totality and the fullness. The meaning cannot be expressed in words alone; it is a feeling, a sense, an experience, a joy, an idea.”- Ann Purcell, 1976Libbie and Ann spent both summers in Provincetown, significant experiences for each artist’s creative output: Libbie in the late 1950s–early 1970s, and Ann in the 1980s. Both artists are also represented in the Provincetown Art Association and Museum’s collection.“Libbie Mark: Abstract Expressionist” and “Ann Purcell: The Seventies” are both on view through July 10.
