Mark's signature collage technique is evident in this painting, where she utilized the physical, three-dimensional properties of layered paper or tissue, imbedding it into the paint, to build up a textural surface. This is unlike many other artists' collage methods that took advantage of paper's other potential visual qualities, such as the shape of a cut-out or the color of the paper itself. In this painting, however, Mark does incorporate some paper purely for its pattern and color, in this case the tan piece with black lines that resembles a woven basket pattern, at lower right.
Aside from the texture, other aspects of this work stand out. It has a vertical composition - most of Mark's paintings are verticals - that creates movement and dynamism throughout. Adding to the energy, Mark painted a large central curved black form and utilized other directional brushstrokes in intense green, red, blue and black to carry the viewer through the work. The no less striking perimeter consists of swaths of intense yellow, orange, and red.
This Abstract Expressionist collage painting was exhibited in Mark's first posthumous solo show Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works, 1950s–1960s, January 18–February 25, 2022 at the National Arts Club, New York, NY. It is featured in the 56-page exhibition catalogue, which contains 27 vivid full-page color reproductions, two essays, a chronology, and additional illustrations. The catalogue is available online, and at Berry Campbell.
