Mark's earlier collage paintings were typically smaller than the later ones, but despite its diminutive size, this is a work from 1966, and one of her smallest. Her early works also showed a heavy emphasis on overall texture. A feature of her later work, including this one, is a restrained use of collage. In this untitled painting, Mark layered the tissue paper onto the paint mostly on the right side, leaving the rest of the surface to be solely painted or entirely left alone, allowing the cardboard substrate to remain visible.
Also demonstrating Mark's great sense of color and drama, the intense primary red, turquoise and neon orange contrast with the thick three-dimensional black paint splatters and calligraphic brushstrokes, reminiscent of other Abstract Expressionist artists such as Franz Kline. Mark more often utilized this graphic element in her compositions from the late 1950s or early 60s, another unusual aspect of this late work.
