This cool and watery Abstract Expressionist painting features a beautiful thinned paint technique that makes the lighter and darker blue tones bleed into each other. In other areas, the blues and purples swirl to create a marbling effect. Mark also incorporated crumpled issue paper into the paint to create her signature surface texture, and added flatter pieces on top of the paint as additional design elements.
This painting could have been inspired by Mark's extensive time painting in the important seaside artist colony of Provincetown. She began her yearly summer visits there in 1957 when she studied with Hans Hofmann, and returned annually until 1971, the year before she died.
Shown in Mark's first posthumous gallery exhibition, Libbie Mark: Collage Paintings (1950s–1960s), May 23–June 22, 2024 at Berry Campbell, New York, NY, this untitled collage painting was also featured on the back cover of the exhibition catalogue, which contains 9 vivid full-color reproductions. The catalogue is available online, and at Berry Campbell.
