Collage Painting #9 is a small but fascinating example of Mark's innovative use of materials to create a uniquely textured surface. She layered and incorporated easy to source mundane items into the paint, such as cardboard and torn bits of spiral bound notepaper. Relatively small in size, it is mounted on Masonite, both aspects typical of Mark's works from the early 1960s.
Also a dynamic example of Mark's talent for color, this Abstract Expressionist painting contrasts bright scarlet against areas of complementary saturated blue-green, adding to its striking visual effects.
This collage painting was one of over thirty works exhibited in Mark's only solo show documented during her lifetime: Libbie Mark: Paintings and Collages, May 15–June 9, 1962 at Knapik Gallery, New York, NY. It features artist and work info labels on verso, and is listed in the surviving pricelist for the show.
