Collage Painting #7 is a beautiful example of Mark's innovative use of materials and color to create unique textural effects and a striking composition. Its surface is comprised of bits of paper layered with paint in deep, rich tones of red, pink, orange, blue and yellow. An Abstract Expressionist, Mark was not prone to including direct references to specific things, but with its circular forms in a variety of hues, it has a floral feel. The smallest collage painting by Mark documented, it is mounted on Masonite, typical of her work from the early 1960s.
This collage painting was one of over thirty works exhibited in Mark's only solo show documented during her lifetime: Libbie Mark: Paintings and Collages, May 15–June 9, 1962 at Knapik Gallery, New York, NY. It was also exhibited in Mark's first posthumous solo show Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works, 1950s–1960s, January 18–February 25, 2022 at the National Arts Club, New York, NY, as well as her first posthumous solo gallery show at Berry Campbell, New York, NY: Libbie Mark: Collage Paintings (1950s–1960s), May 23–June 22, 2024. The piece is featured in the 56-page exhibition catalogue for Art of the Abstract Mark, which contains 27 vivid full-page color reproductions, two essays, a chronology, and additional illustrations. The catalogue is available online, and at Berry Campbell.
