This collage painting is relatively subdued in color and texture compared to many of Mark's works however it is striking because of its contrast of deep black and forest green against the creamy and rosy white background. Mark typically incorporated crumpled paper into thick swaths of paint to create a heavily textured surface. She did not usually utilize paper as a color or compositional component, but rather as a tool to create texture. However, here she applied wrinkled black paper strips to the surface, highlighted here and there with a deep green. These thick lines add texture and color, but more significantly, act as energetic brushstrokes, spread across the painting. It was completed in the early 1960s when Mark more often utilized this type of graphic compositional element and substrate (board rather than canvas). Collage Painting #28 is a horizontal which is unusual for Mark; most of her paintings are verticals.
This Abstract Expressionist work was one of over thirty pieces exhibited in Mark's only solo show documented during her lifetime: Libbie Mark: Paintings and Collages, May 15–June 9, 1962 at Knapik Gallery, New York, NY. It features artist and work info labels on verso, and is listed in the surviving pricelist for the exhibition. Not only does this piece have its original frame, it even has a Knapik exhibition number label.
