Completed in 1966, this otherwise subdued and neutral Abstract Expressionist collage painting would not be the same without Mark's one bold crimson brushstroke in the upper right. Demonstrating her great sense of color and composition, Mark's choice of red also made the little bits of yellow and blue pop. A good representative of her signature vertical format and intricate painting texture, this collage painting incorporates what appears to be rice paper into the paint, which is unusual for her. Mark utilized this material, which brings its own inherently beautiful texture to her painting, in only a few documented works.
This dark and dramatic work was exhibited in Mark's first posthumous solo show Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works, 1950s–1960s, January 18–February 25, 2022 at the National Arts Club, New York, NY, as well as Mark's first posthumous solo gallery exhibition at Berry Campbell, New York, NY: Libbie Mark: Collage Paintings (1950s–1960s), May 23–June 22, 2024. The painting is featured in the 56-page exhibition catalogue for Art of the Abstract Mark, which contains 27 vivid full-page color reproductions, two essays, a chronology, and additional illustrations. The catalogue is available online, and at Berry Campbell.
