Libbie Mark

libbiemarkartist

Mid-c female ab-ex artist. Studied at Art Students League, Hofmann School. Rep'd by Berry Campbell. Libbie Mark Provincetown Fund tells her story.

Happy belated Mother’s Day to artist mothers and Happy belated Mother’s Day to artist mothers and mother figures! #LibbieMark was able to paint and take classes with #BettyHollidayDeckoff and others at the #GreatNeckAdultEducation fine arts program while raising two children, Judith and Reuben. She set up a basement studio in her home so she could work and be available for the children until they went to college. Then her output escalated, due to having a bit more time and skill, moving into #NewYorkCity and establishing a more formal studio.Images Judith and Michael Tanur Collection:Image 1. We haven’t posted in a while about #LibbieMark’s early years in #GreatNeck, Long Island...She moved there in the late 1930s with her husband Edward and two young children, and by the late 1940s enrolled in courses with artist #BettyHollidayDeckoff and others at the #GreatNeckAdultEducation fine arts program. Formerly at @ARTnews, Deckoff was the GNAE program coordinator. Known for its significant artist faculty such as #NellBlaine, @HelenFrankenthalerFoundation, #GraceHartigan, @Louise.Nevelson, and @LarryRiversFoundation (all Deckoff contacts via #ARTnews), GNAE provided a strong foundation for Libbie’s artistic practice. Libbie later studied with Deckoff’s former teacher #VaclavVytlacil at the #ArtStudentsLeague beginning in 1956.Here is a painting from 1953, before Mark arrived at her signature collage painting technique, but already showing an affinity for texture and a heavily built-up surface. Last week we shared one of our favorite #LibbieMar Last week we shared one of our favorite #LibbieMark #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePainting s from the 1960s. Today we are sharing one of our favorites from the 1950s!Painted during #LibbieMarkArtist’s study at the #ArtStudentsLeague with #VaclavVytlacil, this swirling and energy-filled painting pre-dates her use of collage and was completed during a pivotal year when Mark also studied in Provincetown with #HansHofmann, at Vytlacil’s suggestion. (Hofmann was also Vytlacil’s teacher). Dated 1957 – L on verso (‘L’ for the League), this work has one intriguing figural element, a green foot at lower right. This painting was most recently exhibited in “Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works, 1950s–1960s” at the @NationalArtsClub in 2022. For more info on the artist and to purchase a catalogue from this show, please click links in bio. Libbie is represented by @BerryCampbell.
